Russian Badges
A button badge is a small chest badge with certain symbolic. In Russia such items appeared in the 19th century. The first insignia approved in 1827 was granted for irreproachable service. During subsequent years there were various civil and military button badges created to be awarded for merits or under certain circumstances. During the Russian Empire era such items were produced not only from ordinary metals, but from precious metals as well. The best artists and jewelers were toiling at creation of significant chest badges. By the beginning of the 20th century button badges were used practically in all structures: state and educational institutions, etc. Such items served not only as insignia designating the occupied position, but spoke for their wearer’s merits.

After the Revolution of 1917 the appearance of such items changed completely, but their popularity grew manifold. During the ears of the Soviet Union fledging, the industry producing ideological souvenirs was thriving, as it was necessary to provide people of all ages with corresponding attributes. In addition to chest badges that designated belonging to certain organizations (Pioneers, the Komsomol), various sports button badges of the USSR got widespread, that were awarded for achievements in sports events. Commemorative button badges devoted to significant events, such as the anniversary of the Revolution, the victory in the Great Patriotic War, etc. were produced in large runs.
The following metals were used in production of military, sports or other button badges: copper, brass and aluminum. Production was carried out by dye-cast or dye-forging methods. The most widespread production method in the Soviet times was dye-forging with a further enameling of metal. Closer to the 90's of the 20th century button badges were started to be produced mostly from plastic, however, metal items do not fall from grace, especially among collectors.
