Breton Shirt or Telnyashka or Russian striped shirt – whatever you name this stylish shirt, it is famous and loved in many places of the world.
Ultra classic one of the easiest patterns to wear. Long-sleeved shirt or tank top. Breton shirt stripes are horizontal navy blue and white.
The sailor stripes are particularly associated with the coastal French region of Brittany, from where it is thought that the sailor stripe originated and from whose port many stripe-shirted sailors set off to sea.
Knitted from thick wool to protect fishermen from the wind and weather, the striped Breton shirt became the official uniform of the French Navy in 1858. It was thought that the characteristic bands of colour would make it easier to spot a sailor who had fallen overboard.
