On the basis of the Altyn helmet, the K6-3 helmet and the Maska-1 helmet were created. “Altyn” passed real combat tests in Afghanistan and Chechnya and still remains in service with the Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation and army special forces.
Original Altyn helmet is titanium bulletproof helmet used by KGB & FSB CSN for Soviet counter-terror troops.
It is one of the most popular spetsnaz helmets.
The history of the appearance of this helmet is inextricably linked with the Research Institute of Steel, since it was thanks to the capacities of this production that the Altyn project was implemented and put into practice.
In the early 1980s, approximately in 1982-83, on the initiative of the leadership of the special forces of the KGB of the USSR, a copy of a Swiss-made TIG helmet fell into the hands of Russian specialists from the Steel Research Institute. The helmet is handed over to specialists with the installation for the manufacture of a similar sample of domestic production with indicators, if not better, then definitely not lower. According to some reports, the products of the Austrian company Ulbrichts, which also tightly mastered the process of manufacturing protective helmets from titanium, were also studied as additional starting material. Already, tentatively, by 1984, the specialists of the Research Institute of Steel had established the production and transfer of the titanium shell of the helmet and armored to specialists of the KGB of the USSR for the further assembly of the helmet. The final assembly was carried out by specialists of the KGB of the USSR, where the helmet received a radio headset. Initially, according to the specialists of the Research Institute of Steel, the dome consisted only of a titanium shell and had no aramid backwater. The thickness of titanium in Altyn of this production period was 4 mm. Further, approximately from the end of the 80s-beginning of the 90s, the dome received an aramid backing with a simultaneous decrease in the thickness of the titanium shell to 3 mm, similar to the dome of the K6-3 helmet. The helmet turned out to be quite reliable, and, according to the engineers of the Research Institute of Steel, it is stronger than its prototype – the TIG helmet. The shape of the helmet turned out to be slightly different from the prototype, including a larger one. Since the customer, and the manufacturer (in fact), of this helmet was the KGB of the USSR, this helmet was used exclusively in special units of the KGB of the USSR. It is known that the helmet was part of the equipment of the fighters of group “A”, group “B”, group “C” of the KGB of the USSR and even traveled to Afghanistan.
Helmet Altyn served for a rather long time, and managed to be noted in more than one notorious event. With the beginning of the production of helmets of a new generation, such as, for example, Rys-T, Altyn has already lost its position, but still remains one of the most legendary items of equipment for fighters of special units. All these years, the helmet production scheme has been unchanged: the titanium shell and armored have been supplied to the KGB / FSB specialists by the Steel Research Institute, the assembly was carried out directly by the special services.
In the future, other models were developed on the basis of the helmet, which are used by special forces today.
